disenchants into faildust

At the risk of hubris, or rather a kind of negative-hubris, I am an anti-Gevlon. Not only am I not maximising my whatevers and manipulating my thingamies for fun and profit, I’ve actually just committed a ludicrous act of material and financial self-harm.

In my defence … what can I say? Well, it was late, I was tired, I was slightly distracted by Things Going On In Real Life, and like most over-educated people I have an immense capacity of acts of mindboggling idiocy… but, no, there are no excuses. This was entirely stupid.

You know how M’Pocket Tank and I have been running instances in blacktie in order to avoid Northrend?

Well, as the house enchanter, unless she actually wants anything for nostalgia or kicks or re-sale, I scoop up most the swag and smoosh it into magic bits, which are currently going for a bomb on the Horde-side AH. Well, a small bomb. A Molotov cocktail maybe. Enough to fund, when the time comes, the aeronautical aspirations of most of our alts.

On Thursday night, we finished up the instance, I instinctively hit my hearthstone, found myself, unhelpfully, back in Sholazar Basin. Oh well. Not a massively convenient place to be, but it could be worse.

Before logging off, I decide I might as well disenchant my way through my bulging bags to save me having to fiddle around with logistics and admin the next time I logged on…

The arcane dust was flowing nicely.

A stack of planar essences.

Infinite dust? That’s a bit weird. Where did that come from?

Arcane dust, hurrah.

More arcane dust … I shall be rich, rich I tell you!

Infinite dust, again? Wtf?

Couple of prismatic shards.

And a large cosmic shard? Eh?

It was while I was posting everything to bank alt, that I realised I was still in formal wear. Now, of all the places you could be stuck in Azeroth in a dinner jacket, I reckon Nesingwary’s base camp is one of the least incongruous. But, still, I thought to myself, I’d better think about putting some armour on.

So I went to change….

Ah.

So that was where the mysterious infinite dust had come from. It had come my gear. All my gear.

So I am now in the middle of Sholazar Basin with only a tuxedo to my name.

Ooops

Ooops

Small edit: thanks for all the supportive suggestions, as well as the loling – having thought about it, I’m not going to bother a GM for something so trivial/stupid. Ultimately, it’s not I like disenchanted a set of fully gemed and enchanted epics of sexing, just some quest greens and instance blues. I can always tailor myself up a set of decent stuff, and I kind of believe in owning up to failure – in fact, I rather suspect I’ll find recovering from disenchanting all my gear rather more interesting than just grinding in Northrend!

  1. Ouch. The pitfalls of formal wear. I can’t help admiring your boots though, they add a piratey yet practical feel to the whole ensemble.

Have you tried ticketing a GM and asking for a return of your gear? I know when our Vanilla Main Tank emoed out and disenchanted all his stuff, when we got him to calm down a GM turned all the shards back into loots.

    • Yes, getting the right footwear for formal wear in WoW is tremendously difficult, especially for a clothie (there are some really rather stylish leather boots out there). Of course you can wear the dress shoes but they’re just so ‘meh’ – no idea where I got these boots, I think they were the most low-level swashbuckling-looking pair I could find 🙂

I’m not going to bother a GM for something trivial but what on earth happened to your tank? That sounds like serious tangst. He disenchanted all his stuff in a fit of emo? Do tell!

      • I can’t exactly remember all the gory details however I have a sneaking suspicion that it was mostly my fault. In my defence I did coax him into calming down (2 hour chat in IF at like 5 am which ended in him crying) but it didn’t last. He disenchanted and got his gear back once more after that, before finally reaching breaking point right about the time we started doing BWL (which with hindsight was totally understandable).
This was also back when you could disenchant epics with 5 (or similarly low enchanting) so he ditched a maxed level profession (thinking blacksmithing) in order to mail me shards with a suitably hysterical note the first time around.
Tanks seem to be fragile little creatures who need lots of love and affection, with the exception at least of my boyfriend’s warrior who if you call him “fragile” is more likely to hit you over the head with a shield than burst into tears.

  2. I’m trying not to laugh here, and not quite successing. 😉 At least you’re definitely not the only enchanter who’s ever done this, trust me. Though, if you accidentally dusted all your battlegear, you’re probably the most thorough example!

Paging a GM may be worth it, I agree with Erinys. If you’re lucky s/he will give you your gear back in exchange for the amusement value of the story.

    • No, no, laugh away – I loled like a maniac. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only absent-minded enchanter out there, but I don’t think it’s worth bothering a GM. Firstly it’s not like I lost anything special and secondly, although it’s the sort of story I’m not at all embarrassed to share on blog for the amusement of all, I’d actually feel like an *almighty* twit admitting to it in-game.

  3. I once disenchanted my tanking bracers. Rather than admit my idiocy to a GM, I admitted my idiocy to my guild’s friendly blacksmith and handed him the requisite mats to fix the problem.

If I’d done it to more pieces, though, you can bet there would have been a ticket involved.

    Comment by JustinM — July 11, 2009 @ 3:00 pm | Reply

    • Hehe, it’s easily done 🙂

I don’t think the problem is insoluble … I’ll just be in a tuxedo in a while, until questing covers my idiocy.

I just have to hope other players think I’m making some sort of statement 🙂

  4. I did DE”d few things with my mage last year. I definitely would submit a ticket. I did that a few months ago when I accidentally sold the Robe of Novos. GM caught me online, I had my robes shortly after our conversation.

    • Ultimately, I’m not that worried about it, otherwise I’d have been ringing my hands or weeping the corner, rather than writing frivolous blog posts about it. It’s not like I disenchanted anything to which I was particularly attached…. and trying to repair the damage will probably be fun. Maybe 🙂

  5. You disenchanted your sissy robe?
    That could cause verisimilitude issues.

Noel Coward probably showed up at Nessingwary’s just the same…

    Comment by MomentEye — July 11, 2009 @ 5:13 pm | Reply

    • My robe was disappointingly unsissy actually – it was all black and serious looking, so I don’t regret the loss of it.

I’ll keep an eye out for Mr Coward – I think he’s sharing the tent with Mr Wilde actually. Mr Shaw insisted on having one to himself.

  6. Oh. My. Goodness.

I’ve witnessed others starting to shard their gear, but usually it was only 1 piece. 😦 I agree with the others, ticket a GM. You will likely get your armor back. For now, I wouldn’t venture too far from the camp (unless you are flying out somewhere… just don’t wander in the jungle. The animals will smell the fanciness of your formal wear and hunt you down.)

This is another one of those situations where I giggle, but feel tremendously bad for doing so. (But I suspect you know it’s nothing personal ;P)

My main is not an enchanter. In fact, I still lack a high level enchanter…. but I do often fear that I will accidently sell off gear before logging for the night whenever I’m doing something that requires me to switch out. So, I’m almost OCD in checking that it’s all there and accounted for. (Plus, I like to ‘surround’ gear that I want to make sure not to sell or otherwise get rid of with all my other ‘important’ goodies in one of the last bags.)

    • I was half-asleep and M’Pocket Tank wasn’t paying attention, which must be why I behaved like an arrant fool 🙂 We ran about this morning, actually, me in my tux and swashbuckling boots, and M’Pocket Tank in her lovely dress red – and we did fine. We got some virtual funny looks from other players and my mana bar was, alas, sadly flaccid but I didn’t get eaten by crocodiles or anything. So, as long as I don’t try to do anything crazy like try to heal like a heroic, I should be able to stay alive long enough to replace my gear through questing.

Enchanting is the most masochistic profession – it’s painful, painful to level and absurdly fiddly. It suits pedantic Tam down to the ground but it *hurts* me. I’ve actually managed to get this far without selling anything I needed/wanted or disenchanting something I needed/wanted so I guess I was due an act of utter stupidity 🙂

And, please, giggle away – I know I did.

  7. You wont be the first or last. Though probably the first to admit it 😉

    • I don’t know if that’s comforting or not 😉

  8. My tank says he’s disenchanted pieces of his gear before (it comes from carrying lots of different gear sets around, whilst simultaneously being the one who disenchants all the blues from the dungeon) but usually he realizes as soon as he’s disenchanted one piece and sees the loot window come up, at which point he gets to have one last look at his item before he has no choice but to loot it and watch it disappear. He usually owns up to it, says “oh well” and goes LFG for another instance run so he can get a replacement though =P

    • Yes, I should probably really try to use the equipment manager if I’m going to make a habit of this kind of silliness although going to all the trouble of setting it up for the sake of being change quickly and easy into my tuxedo is probably taking vanity a step too far 🙂

I’m sure it will work out and you will have fabulous stories to tell us as you go along 🙂

I also left you a treat over at my blog! So, at least you can have something to giggle (more) at while facepalming yourself 😉

And thank you so much for the murloc – I left my squealing appreciation over at your blog 🙂

    • Oh, thank you – they do look pretty funky actually. I’ll go invest when I tire of the swashbuckling look. But I think Tam would be appalled if I try to dandy him up with a monocle 🙂

  12. okay, Tamarind. I think i am now officially in love with you. I can’t stop laughing at the idea of you running around Sholazar in a tux. I love the tux! I want to run all the instances in a tux! (can female toons wear the tux? No matter! I have a Little Black Dress!)

I can just see you there, getting funky enchanting mats… omg omg. You have totally made my day 🙂

    Comment by lantanasham — July 15, 2009 @ 1:46 am | Reply

    • Yes, yes, WoW is cross-dressing friendly! Female toons an wear a tux … and it looks very hot indeed.

There’s also the white dressing dress if you want to branch out from the little black dress 🙂

And I’m so glad to have amused.

I’ve done all right in the basin in my tuxedo – the crocodile-riding was particularly entertaining.

  13. As far as formalwear goes, I have the Tux outfit going for my bank alt as well as the nobles monocle and the antique silver cufflinks. I am using the Lynx Skin Boots (think that is what they are called, they are twink boots), but they look a bit like Uggs.

    Comment by Darraxus — July 15, 2009 @ 6:04 am | Reply

    • Ah ugg boots, brought back into style back Arthas himself. Honestly, all it takes is one corrupted, soul-less paladin and suddenly all the kids want to wear what he’s wearing.

I’m glad the tradition of the well-dressed bankalt has not fallen by the wayside. I haven’t managed to fish myself a cufflinks for mine yet but he is sporting the Marvellous Madstone of Immortality in case, you know, any of his financial transactions should turn nasty 😉

  15. Oh dear, oh dear I LoLed so hard… jeeze, do you ever worry that you’re starting to fulfil the stereotype of the blond, air-headed bimbo?

Incidentally, Tam is looking rather swish in his lovely suit… And his blondish hair really does just glisten in the sunlight, do you use loreal? because you’re worth it?

    Comment by uke — July 18, 2009 @ 7:49 pm | Reply

    • I think he must use those Herbal essence things … I seem to remember the adverts for them were all basically shot in Sholazar Basin… They always seemed to be women in diaphanous gowns washing their hair with hummingbirds in waterfalls (wtf?).

Tam was always meant to be as close to plain as you could get for a blood elf – his hair is a kind of ordinary brown and he doesn’t seem to spend quite as much time conditioning it as the average belf. But I guess he brushes up well?

Oh God, the ditziness … someday I’ll tell you about the prettiest elf. I really do lose IQ points every time I play him.
